Code of practice for dogs and sheep

It’s every dog owner’s responsibility to ensure their pet is kept under control around livestock. The law is clear: dogs must be on a lead or under close control in fields with sheep.

In fact, a landowner has the legal right to protect their animals if a dog is seen worrying livestock. We encourage all our clients and fellow dog lovers to be aware of these rules, not only for legal protection but out of respect for farmers and the animals they care for.

Understanding “Worrying”

Many people believe their dog is “just playing” or “curious,” but sheep don’t see it that way. Even the presence of an off-lead dog can cause sheep to panic, which can result in serious injury, miscarriage, or death.

This is known as “worrying,” and it includes chasing, barking at, or even simply approaching sheep. Training your dog to have strong recall and to remain calm around livestock is essential — and part of being a responsible dog owner in rural areas.
