Assistance vs other support dogs
While all support dogs provide comfort and companionship, not all are classified the same. Assistance dogs (also called service dogs in some countries) are specially trained to perform specific tasks that help individuals with disabilities — such as guiding someone who is blind, alerting to seizures, or retrieving dropped items.
These dogs undergo rigorous training and are legally recognized, often granted public access rights that allow them to accompany their handler almost anywhere.
Emotional Support and Therapy Dogs
Other types of support dogs include emotional support animals (ESAs) and therapy dogs, both of which provide emotional comfort but in different ways. ESAs help individuals cope with mental health challenges simply through their presence and are often recommended by a doctor — but they are not required to have specialized training.
Therapy dogs, on the other hand, are typically trained to provide comfort to others in hospitals, schools, or care homes. Unlike assistance dogs, ESAs and therapy dogs do not have public access rights under most laws.
